Mastering the Query

Many people believe that the websites found at the top of the search engine results page (SERP), are important or quality web sites, whether they have ever heard of them or not. They also believe they must be successful businesses otherwise they would not be at the top of a search query. It may sound untrue, but research on the web says that it is the way it is. Believe it or not, this makes large and small companies equal, as far as the playing field is concerned. You can be a small company that nobody has ever heard of, but if you are in the top five positions for a keyword or search term, your website will be considered a major player. The size or success of the business makes no difference.

Many Internet users believe that the companies found at the top of a search query are the most important in their industry. These websites found at or near the top of the SERP, are felt to be very credible and trusted by the search engines, whether or not it is true or not. People believe search engines would not rank a poor quality or questionable website high in their ranking systems. Also, most people would not have a problem conducting a business transaction with them.

In reality, the websites achieved this prominence by having good search engine optimization along with the most relevance for the search query. Study after study reveals that most people expect to find what they are searching for in the first few pages of the search engine results. If they don’t, they go back to the search box, add a few descriptive words, and repeat the search. Most searches done today are two to four word phrases. This trend will continue in the future and become greater as more web users become “search savvy”.
